Rose Hart Dale


Rose Hart Dale was born October 23, 1910, the fourth of five children. Her home was the property currently occupied by the First Christian Church on Oakley St.


She attended Livingston Academy from 1924-1928 and was a member of the girls' basketball team. In those days there was no money for uniforms so the team made their black bloomers in Home Economics Class. She later was the first female basketball coach at LA and in 1941-42 her team won the 15th District Championship.


After graduation in 1928, Rose Hart attended Transylvania College in Lexington, Kentucky. After two years at Transylvania, she returned home to teach for two years at Okalona in a two-teacher schoolhouse. She attended Tennessee Tech one year and returned to Transylvania her final year of college graduating in 1935.


Rose Hart’s teaching career included Livingston Elementary for one year and at Livingston Academy for 16 years. In 1954 she moved to Mission, Texas to teach an additional 20 years before retiring in 1974 and returning home to Livingston.


Rose Hart was nationally recognized for her outstanding work by the National Education Association in 1968-69 and as Outstanding Secondary Educator of America in 1973. In total her teaching career spanned 40 years.


Her life revolved around education, church, family, and University of Tennessee sports. She served her community throughout her life as a member of the Eastern Star, Overton County library, and First Christian Church. Rose Hart Dale died on her birthday October 23, 2018, at the age of 108.
